Silent all these years

I may be quoting Tori, but don't worry, no melodrama, sighing, or hand-wringing here. Oh, Tori, thank you though for being a main player in the soundtrack to my high school years.

Anyway, I'm writing yet another pointless post to simply state that I am not dead. I was without internet access for about two weeks, which, though a prolonged period of distress akin to dying, is in fact not fatal as I first suspected. I am a true child of my generation - mama needs her technology. My laptop's battery was buggered, and as it was the holiday season, everyone from Dell was off doing celebratory things rather than shipping my battery to me forthwith. What a bunch of bastards, eh?

However, all has not been lost. My dear, dear husband surprised me with an internet radio, and bloggers, I am in love. Fuck my husband, fuck cheesecake, fuck lentils. This is the real thing. In case you are wondering, it is a radio that picks up pretty much any internet radio station I want to listen to. It connects wirelessly to our network, which means it can also access any MP3s I have on the laptop. Oh, the mind boggles. Since I have all of this aural power at my fingertips, any recommendations of radio stations you like? I listen to most types of music with the exception of contemporary country, so show me what you've got. I tend to gravitate toward stations with indie/alternative fare, per exemple 94/7 (Portland), East Village Radio (where else?) and XPN/YRock (Philly). I am open to anything, as long as it's not the twangy country shit or standard Top 40. Talk radio, public radio, international, miscellaneous. Whatever.

Now, if you'll excuse me I have thousands of bastard blog feeds to read, my nose to wipe, and an internet radio to hump. I'm swamped.

Maybe it's the hick in me, but I like Z92's Todd N Tyler talk show in the morning week days (92.3 FM Omaha, Nebraska). I get to hear reviews on porn; hear questions about "why do I have this strange burning sensation when I pee" when they have Doc Talk; and obscure news about the guy who had to divorce his sheep.

I got hooked during all my drives to the Metro in the early mornings (they go from 5 - 10 a.m.). I could laugh and cry within just hours!

BTW, why am I always first?

I am stuck in the '80's so I like Club 977. They do occasionally play some punk on there, but mostly mainstream 80's pop.

Under the public radio section (in iTunes- Same thing?) there is a great station called KCRW. They stream some incredible trancy, loungy stuff.

You've already found mine -- XPN. I lived in Philly for more than 10 yrs. I miss XPN! Enjoy some for me.

But go easy on that humping okay? Don't want anyone to get hurt.

Minnesota Public Radio runs a station called The Current (http://minnesota.publicradio.org/radio/services/the_current/) that features all sorts of new music and new artists -- not classical, but anything. Lots of indie stuff. Recent playlists included Kate Havenik, The Maccabees, Iron and Wine, Babyshambles, Ben Lee, Goldfrapp, Aimee Mann, Beirut, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Sigur Ros, Neko Case, Afghan Whigs, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc. Some less-heard songs by oldies but goodies - Elvis, Donovan, David Bowie, Nirvana, Etta James, Johnny Cash, etc.

(That last one convinced you, didn't it?)

And hey -- it's MPR, so no commercials!

I humbly submit KFOG in San Francisco as my all-around favorite (http://kfog.com/). Sounds like it's right up your alley, based on the preferences your expressed. If I ever moved away from the bay area, I'd totally have to acquire a device like your hump to get me through the day! (BTW, you have heard the song "My Humps" by the Black Eyed Peas, no? If not, I'll email you a copy. Not exactly my usual taste but damn did that song stick in my head!)

So glad you're back!

Never checked into internet radio, but I may have to investigate this further.

As you wish :)

If you're in the mood for more mellow stuff, we listen to Folk Alley a lot. And also WBUR (Boston) - another folky station, and they have a couple of streams - one plays a lot of folk-rock, which is always hard to find on the radio because it doesn't quite fit anywhere. (I think it's the "Contemporary Folk" stream.)

There's a good public radio station in Albany, NY (www.wamc.org) that has some great shows on it. Vox Pop is one of my favourites.

I usually listen to Pandora when I listen online.
